Brief Biography of Speaker

Dr. Byrd is the founder of Nashville Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center, a facility dedicated to state-of-the-art specialty orthopaedic care.  He is team physician for the Tennessee Titans as well as Trevecca Nazarene University, Martin Methodist College, and several area high schools.  He is attending physician to the Nashville Ballet and has previously served as physician for the US Olympic team.  Additionally, he serves as a consulting orthopaedic surgeon for numerous professional sports franchises including teams in the NFL, NHL, NBA, WNBA and MLB as well as the ATP professional tennis tour.

He is a member of the Medical Advisory Board for Titleist Performance Institute and the Board of Trustees for the Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Surgery.  He has held various appointments including Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University, Associate Editor for the Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Surgery, Board of Director of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and President of the American Equestrian Association, among others.

Dr. Byrd has authored two textbooks as well as numerous book chapters and scientific articles.  Many of these have focused on the clinical research he has continued throughout his career and on his innovations in surgical techniques and instrumentation.  These have covered various aspects of sports related injuries and less invasive arthroscopic techniques, including his pioneering role in the development of his arthroscopy.

Brief Description of Presentation

Assessment and management of the athlete’s hip is outlined including physical examination and radiographic assessment.  Characteristics of select lesions are discussed including mechanism of injury, diagnosis and treatment options.  A management strategy for addressing athletic hip injuries is provided.
