GATA Lori Mobley Groover Leadership Program Continues in 2011

PEACHTREE CITY, GA--The Executive Board of the Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association (GATA) will present the Lori Mobley Groover Leadership Awards at the association’s upcoming meeting in January 2011.  Scholarship awards totaling $1000 will be made to athletic training students on the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels.  All of the recipients must be planning to pursue a career in athletic training and demonstrate superior leadership skills as they progress through their academic and clinical programs.

The program is named for Lori Mobley Groover who served on the GATA Executive Board from Jan. 2003 through Dec. 2006, serving as President from Jan. 2005-Dec. 2006.  She later served as Secretary of the Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Association (SEATA) from 2007-2009.  Lori passed away in 2009 after a heroic battle against cancer.

Throughout her athletic training career, Lori was a leader, often serving as a pioneer in new athletic training settings.  The GATA offers three scholarships, one for a high school student, one for a college student, and one for a college graduate student. Lori was involved in all these areas during her career and “The  Executive Board feels that Lori deserves to be remembered in a fashion befitting her passion and dedication.” stated Michael Clanton, current GATA President.

The scholarships will be awarded as part of the 2011 Honors and Awards Banquet hosted the GATA in Peachtree City, Ga. at 6pm on Jan. 14.  The banquet will be held at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center.  Applications for the awards are available on the association’s website, www.athletictraining.org.  Tickets to the event are included in the annual meeting registration held Jan 14-15, but may also be purchased separately online.

The Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association is an organization committed to education of its members and enhancement of the profession of athletic training, leading to better healthcare for the population which it serves. The GATA is proudly composed of licensed athletic trainers in many different settings. Over 700 licensed athletic trainers from professional, collegiate, and high school teams to industries, physician offices, and rehabilitation clinics all work together to promote and practice the profession of athletic training within the state of Georgia.  GATA Updates can be followed on online through Twitter (GATAInfo).

Mississippi News Dec. 2010

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

In addition to renewing your NATA membership (that includes SEATA and MATA dues), it is also time to renew your state license.  Please visit the Mississippi State Department of Health website at www.ms.gov/HealthLicensing to renew online.  The online system is set up so that one out of every four will be audited.  If you are selected, simply fax a copy of your current BOC certification card to the number indicated.  Please remember that your license verification will be a printable letter.

We have had an interesting few months working with the Department of Health on the Regulations that reflect the 2009 changes to our practice act.  The Board of Health will be voting on our proposed Regulations on January 12, 2011.  A copy of the proposed Regulations is available to view on the MSDH Professional Licensure website.  We are continuing to work on a few areas and more information should be available at a later date.  If you have any specific questions, please contact Donna Wesley at dwesleyatc@yahoo.com.

The MATA is continuing to stay focused on national issues including youth sport safety and health care reform.  We will again be represented at the NATA’s Capitol Hill Day on February 24 – 25.  It is important that we continue to be active on these and other issues.  I want to encourage each of you to take a moment and contact our two Senators and your Congressman (or newly-elected Congressman for Districts 1 and 4) over the next few weeks to identify yourself and send good wishes for the upcoming session.  You might also want to express an interest in helping him (and his staff) by offering feedback on areas of expertise as an athletic trainer should an issue arise during the session.

Jeff Bryant is taking the lead on the MATA’s exhibit booth at the Mississippi Athletic Administrators’ Conference in January.  As you may know, the MHSAA will have several new staff members and we hope that we can continue to work together to improve the safety and health care of our secondary school athletes.

The 2011 MATA Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium will again be in Biloxi at the IP Resort and Spa and is scheduled for June 28 – 29.  The Advisory Council is scheduled to meet on June 27th, and Jeff Moore is working on a possible educational session also on that evening.  Please look for more information within the next few months.

Don’t forget to nominate deserving MATA members and advocates for our MATA Awards.  The deadline for nominations will be in early February.  More information will be available soon.

Your MATA Officers want to thank everyone for a great year and send our best wishes to you and your family for a Happy & Healthy 2011!
